Red velvet- except not. This smoothie is packed with nutrition, and has a hint of that smooth rich chocolate, reminiscent of red velvet. It also has beets in it, giving it a slight earthy taste, but some supercharged nutrients.
Why beets? Beets are a great purifier, and are full of vitamins and minerals… plus give our smoothie an awesome red color.
Why hemp seeds? Protein people! 10 grams per serving! Plus these neat little seeds make a great base, by just blending with water to make “hemp milk”.
First, mix 3 tbsp hemp seeds with 1 cup of water in a blender.
Next, add some cacao or carob- about 3 tbsp for a rich chocolate taste.
Next add in 1 tsp of your favorite coconut ingredient- ya know, for the “icing.” I added some freeze dried coconut water powder, then 2 tbsp of coconut sugar, or 1 tbsp of honey, half of a small beet, and half a banana (optional, but makes a thicker, sweeter smoothie.) Finally, add a handful of ice cubes and blend until smooth. The longer the smoothie sits, I noticed it tasted much more of the beets than when I drank it immediately. For those less than fond of beets, use just a sliver of beet, and up the cacao.
