Curated and considered for the modern primal life

All Natural Peppered Beef Jerky by Sweetwood - 2 oz

I’m going to try to do justice to this jerky with words, but let me encourage you to just stare at the picture next to this description. Food porn does not get any better than this. This stuff is the epitome of umami. Like the best BBQ you ever had, this jerky takes meat to transcendent places through masterful seasoning and smoking techniques. Check out the glistening hue of the meat, the deep rich color, the nubbly contours, the generous thickness. There is a fierce culinary intelligence behind this jerky, a mastery of meat and how to make it mindblowingly delicious. The Peppered flavor evokes the best steak you ever had — it’s studded with fat smoky bits of black pepper. The best flavor parallels I can think of are Korean BBQ short ribs, or Chinese lacquered pork — rich smoky sweet salty goodness that goes deep into the pleasure centers of your brain.

For the true, true stories behind this incredible foodstuff, read on.

There are about a million different kinds of beef jerky out there. And I’ve probably tried most of them. I’ve gotten so I can eyeball jerky without actually eating it, so I don’t have to endure yet another cardboardy chew, yet another over-salted fibrous mouthful. I’ve got favorites and lesser favorites, jerkies for special occasions and everyday eatin’. And then there’s Sweetwood. This stuff is on a level all its own. It’s so over-the-top crazy delicious that it should really be called something besides jerky. Maybe jerquée. Except that it’s as all-American as you can get — it comes from a hundred-year-old ranch in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where animals have been roaming in the fertile Elk River Valley for hundreds of years before that.

I’m going to try to do justice to this jerky with words, but let me encourage you to just stare at the picture next to this description. Food porn does not get any better than this. This stuff is the epitome of umami, the elusive 6th sense that means OMG utter sweet-salty-savory-explosive deliciousness. Like the best BBQ you ever had, this jerky takes meat to transcendent places through masterful seasoning and smoking techniques. Check out the glistening hue of the meat, the deep rich color, the nubbly contours, the generous thickness. This jerky is so powerfully flavorful that you’ll want to share it with everyone you know, except that you won’t want to share the pack you’re already eating. Or the one after that.

No corners have been cut when hand-crafting this jerky. This is serious artisanal jerky. I don’t use that word lightly (everyone’s an “artisan” these days, it seems) — I use it to say that there is a fierce culinary intelligence behind this jerky, a mastery of meat and how to make it mindblowingly delicious. This stuff is thicker than any other jerky you’ll find, but also easier to eat, because it’s been cut right, against the grain. Its flavoring is impeccable — no matter which of the four amazing flavors you choose, you’ll be pretty much blown away. The best flavor parallels I can think of are Korean BBQ short ribs, or Chinese lacquered pork — rich smoky sweet salty meaty goodness that goes deep into the pleasure centers of your brain. The Peppered flavor evokes the best steak you ever had — it’s studded with fat smoky bits of black pepper — but mostly it’s just pure succulent umami deliciousness. Every nibble and bite of this stuff is sheer joy. The packaging is also really awesome — the design captures the spirit of the old west with an elegant modern edge; these packs make great gifts. Although, as established above, you’re going to have a really hard time sharing.

Why beef is so good for you

Sometimes called nature's best-tasting multivitamin, beef is not only one of the most protein-rich foods you can eat, but it’s insanely nutritious in other ways. It’s extremely high in zinc, vitamin B12, selenium, iron, vitamin B6, phosphorus, niacin, potassium, and riboflavin. Sweetwood beef comes from cows that are pastured most of their lives, so it’s naturally lean. Grass-fed beef contains more heart-healthy omega-3 fats, more vitamins A and E, higher levels of antioxidants, and up to seven times the beta-carotene of grain-fed. Grass-fed beef also contains high amounts of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), thought by many to prevent cancer. It’s also kinder on cattle, and on the environment.
