Coffee is something that many of us love, nurture, and cradle in our daily lives. Add to that the lure of chocolate and now you've created the ultimate mash-up, the mocha. How about finding that mocha deliciousness in a primal-friendly bar? Unwrap it and take a bite any time of day, whether post-workout or post-meeting, finding bliss in a toothsome bar with a little sweet and a hint of salt. If your primally-oriented coach had a prescription pad, they would write down "RxBars" to enhance your recovery each day. Coffee Cacao is RxBar's mocha-mouthful with ample protein and simple ingredients as foundation. These wonderful coffee bean-studded bars, made delicious with dried fruit and hearty with egg white and almonds, are compliant with even the most structured meal plans out in paleo land. Hooray!
I'm a complete push-over for a good, chewy cookie—toothsome is good, chomp-worthy even better, no crispness required. It wasn't until college that I started getting into coffee, but chocolate? Always! Mocha lattes were what we drank when we "needed" to keep going through another study session. So where does the cookie story meet the latte story? In THIS bar, this amazing chewy thing that I never knew I needed until RxBar came along and showed me the error of my craving ways. Now I can have my coffee and chew it, too. Yum.
RxBar started making bars for those of us ready to "graduate" from the tried-and-true date/nut bars. Those date bars are still delicious, make no mistake, but they can be very sweet and never did have much in the way of protein. As for the rest of the field, other "healthy" protein bars love to add things like rice or hemp or soy protein or "natural" sweeteners just to bind everything together, ingredients that might not be aligned with our nutritional goals. RxBar meets everyone half-way perfectly: start with dried fruit and nuts, add a few spices, add some egg white protein, and . . . that's it.
When it comes to flavor, RxBar's Coffee Cacao bar is a huge hit with everyone who loves both chewy bars and the savoriness of coffee. Eating this bar is like munching on chocolate covered coffee beans – without the overly aggressive sugar/caffeine hit, or the coffee grounds stuck in your teeth. The occasional crunch from a bit of cacao nib or a piece of almond adds awesome texture. This is a satisfying bar, from first to last bite. It won't leave your teeth aching nor your jaw unexercised (that's a good thing!).
RxBar was conceived by two friends who wanted a better protein bar option. Here's what they say about why it all began, "RxBar was the first real food fruit and nut protein bar on the scene. Friends since grade school Peter and Jared were inspired by the lack of a REAL FOOD protein bar. All of their favorite snack bars either lacked protein or were chock full of artificial preservatives and ingredients. They headed into the kitchen, got cooking, and RxBar was born."
Peter and Jared promise that their bars will never contain these ingredients: Dairy, Soy, Gluten, Added sugars, Artificial sweeteners, Whey, Artificial ingredients, Sugar alcohols, GMOs, or Preservatives. Need they say more?
Dates and figs are the main source of sweetness in these bars, and a natural preservative and source of awesome chewiness. Dates are vitamin and mineral-rich — they’re particularly high in iron and vitamin K. Figs are just awesome regardless, not to mention a great source of copper.
Egg whites are one of the best sources of protein. Unlike more conventional sources, egg white protein is immediately absorbed into the body due to the naturally high biological availability. In addition to the high-quality protein content, egg whites are jam-packed with minerals and amino acids essential to keeping your body healthy.
Almonds are naturally delicious and extremely nourishing. Healthy fats, fiber, antioxidants, calcium, zinc, selenium, copper, magnesium, manganese, tryptophan and vitamin E are just a handful of the key nutrients that make almonds so nutritious. Almonds are so nutritious — their list of benefits reads like a patent medicine bottle. They’re full of health-giving fats, like oleic acid and linoleic acid, powerful antioxidants that can protect against many forms of cancer (oleic acid can protect women against breast cancer specifically), and can also significantly lower the amount of LDL in your blood, and reduce your risk for heart disease. A wonderful natural sweetness and impressive variety of nutrients makes almonds one of nature’s most perfect foods.
Nectar to the dancing goats of Ethiopia, and the #1 source of antioxidants in Americans' diets (google it!). Need I say more?
Cacao beans: chock-full of health-giving and beautifying fatty acids and minerals, as well as antioxidants, and nutrients that support mood and the immune system. Cacao is one of the most powerful known superfoods, and had been used for thousands of years to boost health and energy levels. Raw cacao is one of the most phytochemically complex foods on Earth. Many of its constituents have yet to even be discovered! We could write a dissertation on the health benefits of raw cacao, but here are just a few compounds found in raw cacao beans,: neurotransmitter anandamide (the "bliss" chemical), neurotransmitter phenethylamine (also known as PEA, the "love molecule"), neurotransmitter serotonin (a brain chemical that acts to shield against stress, increasing ones sense of wellbeing) neurotransmitter dopamine (increases ones sense of pleasure and elevates the mood), phytochemical coumarin (suppresses appetite, and also has anti-tumor properties and helps with blood circulation) enzyme asparaginase (a special enzyme with anti-cancer properties) ergosterol (a necessary chemical for Vitamin D assimilation), sitosterol (helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels), and magnesium (helps combat osteoporosis and weak bones/teeth, heart disease, migraines, muscle spasms, painful menstrual periods, and even diabetes.)
It's a bar. Unwrap, bite, chew, enjoy!
