When fall comes a knockin', everyone goes pumpkin spice stalkin'. It's in coffee, snacks, gum, marshmallows, chocolates, bread, air freshener, hoo boy. Just google and you'll see the madness. That's why I am a little flummoxed by my adoration for this RxBar. Yes, it's pumpkin spice flavor. No, it's not at all gimmicky or weird, and the reason why is that it is everything that makes Paleo good: real ingredients, real flavor. The bar, basically, tastes like chewy pumpkin pie. The best crustless portable pumpkin pie ever. And that should be enough to tamp down the knowledge that pumpkin spice Pringles is real. Eesh.
I never was crazy-excited about the fall spice latte "thing" every year. But what is it that I *do* love? Pumpkin pie. Real deal homemade not-too-sweet pumpkin pie. The filling is my favorite part and I could just eat that as a standalone custard dish. Everything about those flavors comes through in the RxBar, with a bit of extra satsifying chewy texture. Rather than a smooth custard that melts on the tongue, this pumpkin spice bar lives up to its role as a meal bar, with bend and solidity that makes each chomp satisfying. The occasional crunch from a piece of almond adds some awesome texture, but my favorite part is just the pure chewiness. This is a satisfying bar, from first to last bite. It won't leave your teeth aching nor your jaw unexercised (that's a good thing!).
When it comes to portable snacks, I'm a complete push-over for pretty much anything that is chewy—toothsome is good, chomp-worthy even better, right up to that fine line of "oof, it's stuck in my teeth". That might be why I fell into love with bodybuilding protein bars many years ago—those chewy, sweet, chemically-enhanced bricks sometimes referred to as "meal replacement" options. They were satisfying for a few moments, even when tasting faintly of a laboratory . . . until you started to realize how un-like food they really were. There are better options for post-workout (or work) nutrition these days for those of us trying to eat in a primal direction. But if you're not really into tins of sardines or pre-cooked omelets in plasticware, having a bar option that's not too sweet and has the staying power of extra protein is a wonderful find.
RxBar started making bars for those of us ready to be "prescribed" something better than the tried-and-true date/nut bars. Those date bars are still delicious, make no mistake, but they can be very sweet and never did have much in the way of protein. As for the rest of the field, other "healthy" protein bars love to add things like rice or hemp or soy protein or "natural" sweeteners just to bind everything together, ingredients that might not be aligned with our nutritional goals. RxBar meets everyone half-way perfectly: start with dried fruit and nuts, add a few spices, add some egg white protein, and . . . that's it. Every ingredient is Whole30 approved, even if the general thrust of Whole30 is to not manage your cravings with bars. So, you can enjoy an RxBar if needed, and that's a relief.
RxBar was conceived by two friends who wanted a better protein bar option. Here's what they say about why it all began, "RxBar was the first real food fruit and nut protein bar on the scene. Friends since grade school Peter and Jared were inspired by the lack of a REAL FOOD protein bar. All of their favorite snack bars either lacked protein or were chock full of artificial preservatives and ingredients. They headed into the kitchen, got cooking, and RxBar was born."
Peter and Jared promise that their bars will never contain these ingredients: Dairy, Soy, Gluten, Added sugars, Artificial sweeteners, Whey, Artificial ingredients, Sugar alcohols, GMOs, or Preservatives. Need they say more?
Dates are the main source of sweetness in these bars, and a natural preservative and source of awesome chewiness. Dates are vitamin and mineral-rich — they’re particularly high in iron and vitamin K.
Egg whites are one of the best sources of protein. Unlike more conventional sources, egg white protein is immediately absorbed into the body due to the naturally high biological availability. In addition to the high-quality protein content, egg whites are jam-packed with minerals and amino acids essential to keeping your body healthy.
Almonds are naturally delicious and extremely nourishing. Healthy fats, fiber, antioxidants, calcium, zinc, selenium, copper, magnesium, manganese, tryptophan and vitamin E are just a handful of the key nutrients that make almonds so nutritious. Almonds are so nutritious — their list of benefits reads like a patent medicine bottle. They’re full of health-giving fats, like oleic acid and linoleic acid, powerful antioxidants that can protect against many forms of cancer (oleic acid can protect women against breast cancer specifically), and can also significantly lower the amount of LDL in your blood, and reduce your risk for heart disease. A wonderful natural sweetness and impressive variety of nutrients makes almonds one of nature’s most perfect foods.
This gently warming spice is the perfect complement to pumpkin and other spices, and it helps with blood sugar, preventing a 'sugar crash' after consuming carbohydrates.
It's a bar. Unwrap, bite, chew, enjoy!
