For the true, true stories behind this incredible foodstuff, read on.

You’ve probably heard about the amazing health benefits of sea veggies, but let’s face it, they can taste a little swampy. Maybe you’ve even got a few bags or bottles of seaweedy stuff in your pantry, taunting you every time you reach for the kale chips instead. Brace yourself — your life is about to change. A miracle breakthrough in molecular gastronomy has occurred quite by accident on a little sustainable algae farm in Costa Rica, and we are ecstatic to be able to bring you a product which is 100% raw unprocessed vegan spirulina, but tastes like Pringles potato chips. Yeah, you read correctly. Remember years or decades (or weeks) ago, when you used to eat a sleeve of these oh-so-processed salty toasty fatty potato chips without much remorse? Those days might be over, but you can now indulge daily and proudly in these spirulina crunchies, which somehow manage to explode in the mouth with the exact same flavor profile as a Pringle. How on earth do these uber-healthy crunchy emerald morsels manage to taste so craveably delicious, so unlike what you’d expect? We’ll leave that one for the molecular gastronomists to figure out. In the meantime, the great and powerful Dr. Oz touts spirulina as one of the most important anti-aging nutritional supplements in existence, so eat up. These crunchies will bring a (green) smile to your face every time you munch on a few, expecting a swamp, and getting fried potato goodness instead. Sprinkle these little wonders on salads, soups, eggs, your tongue, anyplace and anytime you want an umami hit and a moment of confused delight. (For more on molecular gastronomy, check out Modernist Cuisine at Home, by Nathan Myhrvold. I don’t know if even Myhrvold can explain the mystery of the Pringles-tasting spirulina crunchies, but it’s still a good read.)

Spirulina Crunchies

Spirulina Crunchies are crunchy little bits of 100% pure spirulina. Spirulina is one of nature’s most perfect, nutrient rich foods and there has never been a more delicious way to get high quality nutrition into your body. Spirulina is a renowned source of protein, chlorophyll, trace minerals, vitamins, antioxidants and is also a world class immune system booster. Plus spirulina is known to protect against and detoxify radioactive particles and can help balance your body’s pH (alkalinity).

Spirulina Crunchies are 100% non-GMO and are grown and processed without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers and are rigorously tested to guarantee that they are free of pollutants such as pesticides and heavy metals and bacteria.

What is Spirulina?

Spirulina, Arthrospira platensis, is a fresh water micro-vegetable that gets its name from its microscopic spiral shape. Spirulina has been eaten by many cultures throughout history and if you could go back in time to visit the Aztecs you would find them using ropes to skim spirulina from the surface of lakes and ponds. They would then set the algae out to dry and make small, nourishing superfood cakes.

Here's one of our health hero physicians, Dr. Joseph Mercola, discussing the important benefits of spirulina in your diet.

How Spirulina Crunchies are made

Our Spirulina Crunchies are grown in a pristine region of beautiful Costa Rica. The algae is raised in covered pools of pure, nutrient rich water where paddles keep the water moving in a circular motion to avoid stagnation. Each step of the process is carefully monitored to avoid contamination from impurities. Once the desired amount of spirulina is reached in a pool, the water is poured across fine screens that separate the algae from the water. It is at this point that the process for Spirulina Crunchies™ becomes unique. Usually the algae would be dried at high temperatures and powdered or even spray dried. Instead, our spirulina is ground into a paste and is then pressed into little strands, like spaghetti. The strands are then gently air-dried at low temperatures. It is this simple but revolutionary process that creates the extraordinary crunch and flavor of Spirulina Crunchies.

Benefits

The benefits of Spirulina range far and wide. Spirulina is one of the best sources of protein in the world — it contains about 65% protein including all eight essential amino acids. Plus, the protein in spirulina is five times easier to digest than that of meat or soy. Spirulina also contains an abundance of other nutrients such as, iron, vitamin E, beta-carotene, enzymes, B vitamins, omega 3's and 6's, DHA and a rare essential fatty acid called gamma linolenic acid (GLA), found in mother's milk, GLA is a powerful anti-inflammatory known to ease everything from joint pains such as arthritis to menstrual cramping.

Spirulina is also a rich source of phytocyanins, the blue pigment which gives it its color. Phytocyanins are powerful anti-aging antioxidants that help defend our cells against free radical damage. All together spirulina contains over 100

different vital nutrients and is one of nature's richest and most complete sources of nutrition. It is more important than ever due its ability to help protect our bodies from radiation.

Numerous studies have shown spirulina's positive effects against radiation. Elements in spirulina can bind with radioactive particles and help to flush them out of the body while simultaneously boosting the immune system to further protect against damage. A1993 study in Belarus on children affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster showed that in just 20 days taking five grams of spirulina per day resulted in a 50% reduction of Cesium-137 in their systems. In 1995 a Russian patent was awarded for the use of spirulina to improve the immune systems of people contaminated by radiation. Further studies showed that consumption of spirulina reduced the radiation load of radioactive strontium and cesium ingested in contaminated foods. Radiation levels in foods are rising across parts of the US and Europe due to disasters like the Fukushima disaster; thus, it is an important time to include more foods like spirulina in our diets.

Try crunchies mixed into any nut cheese or soup. They are also a perfect addition to any type of green salad. Remember spirulina is a food, like lettuce or apples, not a supplement, so you can eat as much as you are comfortable with.
