These amazing bars are handcrafted with heart, using only the highest quality, purest ingredients. Lulu’s uses only cacao that is fair trade and sourced from small family farms. Every ingredient in their bars is sourced mindfully to ensure they are aligned with sustainable creation, and they partner only with companies who hold these values. Their amazingly delicious raw cacao is sourced through Pacari in Ecuador. They sweeten their bars exclusively with sustainably-harvested coconut sugar, the nutrient-rich sap of coconut palm trees. This nectar pours forth by "tapping" the blossom of the tree before it matures into a coconut. Raw dark chocolate is full of antioxidants, minerals, and feel-good chemicals, and coconut palm sugar is low-glycemic and mineral-rich. Together (and with a few other beautiful additions), Lulu makes them into magic.

Tree to Tongue
Aloha, I'm Lulu, creator of Lulu's Chocolate . Many people ask me how I got started doing what I do, and here is my story.
While living in Portland, Oregon teaching yoga I took a trip to Hawaii to explore the tropics. It was on this trip that I experienced my first taste of raw cacao straight from the tree. It was mind blowing! I had always been a bit of a chocoholic and it felt like for the first time in my chocolate explorations, I was actually fulfilled. My brain buzzed with bliss and my whole body filled with ecstatic energy. WOW!
I knew cacao trees only grow in the tropics, yet after one taste of the raw food that gave me so much energy and bliss I was determined to find a way to recreate those sensations wherever I went. I left Hawaii to attend the Burning Man festival, where everyday I mixed a new flavor of raw chocolate in my coconut bowl and fed anyone around. Each day a bigger crowd came to my camp to experience my chocolate and my new great passion. It was clear that people loved my raw chocolate alchemy!
After the festival, I traveled through California for a few months, experimenting with a variety of recipes and ingredients just for fun. When I returned to Portland for the winter holidays I was in for a surprise! I had so many requests from people wanting to give my raw chocolate creations as holiday gifts. So, I got busy filling orders. In fact, my chocolate became so popular that a business was born by demand of those who love it.
The raw chocolate wants to be shared, and I am happy to co-create with it's magical energy. I am blessed to be running an ever growing, successful business and have the most amazing job in the world! I feel grateful to be able to share this gift with everyone and to spread the chocolate love!
Beauty and The Treats
Chocolate comes from the tree Theobroma Cacao. These trees grow around the equator, 20 degrees on either side. Kind of like the belt of the earth. Cacao pods grow directly from the trunk of the tree and vary in size and color. When you open a pod you find an average of 40 cacao beans covered in a unique, aromatic, sensual white fruit. The beans are then dried and transformed into what we know and love as chocolate. It takes an average of 200 cacao beans to produce one pound of chocolate. How is it raw? Many people ask us about the difference between raw chocolate and "regular" chocolate. We choose raw chocolate because it is the closest experience we can recreate to indulging in a fresh cacao pod right from the tree. It is the best way to maintain the properties of this magical food, from tree to table. Raw cacao is sun dried instead of roasted. It is minimally processed, keeping temperatures under 113 degrees (it differs per producer) so as to keep the cacao's amazing properties intact as it becomes what we know as chocolate.
What amazing properties?
There are good reasons chocolate and love are associated. Phenylethylamine (PEA) has also been called the "Love Chemical." It seems to create euphoric feelings, excitement and arousal. PEA levels often peak during orgasm.Cacao contains PEA in natural abundance and raises our brain's PEA levels, causing our dopamine levels to rise as well. That is just one reason it makes us feel so good! Cacao also contains Anandamide, also known as the "Bliss Chemical." It is derived from the Sanskrit word "ananda" meaning bliss. Cacao also contains the essential amino acid Tryptophan, which is critical for production of Serotonin, our primary neurotransmitter. You Deserve Bliss!
Activate Your Superpowers!
Not only does cacao provide a natural high, it is also a health food! Cacao is one of nature's richest sources of Antioxidants & Minerals. It is also nature's primary source of Magnesium, making it true Heart Medicine. Magnesium is much needed by the heart as it decreases blood coagulation, lowering blood pressure and helping the heart pump more effectively. So it is actually true that "chocolate opens the heart." Magnesium also helps builds bones and increases brain power, helping to Activate Your Superpowers!
Ladies, your intuition is right on
Ladies, your intuition is right on (of course) when you want chocolate for moon time. We love it's hormone balancing effects and natural endorphins. Our wise bodies crave the magnesium boost. Chocolate Yoga? O ya! Magnesium increases flexibility and strength. We love it before our morning yoga or any excercise. Breakfast of Champs! Feel the Energy!
Cacao is high in Theobromine, a natural stimulant. It is much less stimulating than caffeine (which chocolate contains very little of) but takes longer for the body to break down. This results in a more gentle, sustained energy boost. Theobromine is also the reason to keep your dog away from your chocolate. They do not have the enzymes to break it down and it can be a bit like doggie cocaine. Not good. Other sources of theobromine include yerba mate, coffee, tea and the kola nut.
Beauty and The Treats
Cacao hydrates your body from the inside out, providing natural moisture to your skin. It can also help you lose weight. What?!? True. Ever notice that cocoa powder is in most weight loss products on the market? This is due to it's MAO inhibitors, which curb the appetite naturally. It is real food and we think it makes a marvelous meal. Most importantly, chocolate so often makes one smile, which radiates your natural beauty full force.
Sensuality: Chocolate is the oldest known Aphrodisiac still on the scene. It really works. Mmm... The scent of chocolate has been scientifically proven to increase blood flow to the penis. All of our creations pair cacao with it's mythological lover, Vanilla. Vanilla is the fruit of an orchid flower. Now that's sexy!
Why this chocolate bar is so good for you
- Raw cacao is one of the most phytochemically complex foods on Earth. Many of its constituents have yet to even be discovered! We could write a dissertation on the health benefits of raw cacao, but here’s enough to whet your appetite:
- Here are just a few compounds found in raw cacao beans,: neurotransmitter anandamide (the "bliss" chemical), neurotransmitter phenethylamine (also known as PEA, the "love molecule"), neurotransmitter serotonin (a brain chemical that acts to shield against stress, increasing ones sense of wellbeing) neurotransmitter dopamine (increases one's sense of pleasure and elevates the mood), phytochemical coumarin (suppresses appetite, and also has anti-tumor properties and helps with blood circulation) enzyme asparaginase (a special enzyme with anti-cancer properties) ergosterol (a necessary chemical for Vitamin D assimilation) and sitosterol (helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels). Amazing!
- Certain flavonols found in cacao have been shown to help relax blood vessels for lowered blood pressure and less strain on the heart
- One ounce of raw cacao provides 314% RDA of iron, lowers blood sugar by reducing insulin by 50%, lowers blood sugar and reduce risk of heart attack or stroke by 40%, reduces anxiety, by lowering cortisol levels.
- Raw cacao is one of the richest sources of magnesium on the planet! Many people these days are deficient in this integral mineral. In fact in the last century, magnesium consumption has decreased by as much as 50% in our modern diets, and it's estimated that 80% of the population may be deficient. Lack of magnesium plays a role in many conditions such as osteoporosis and weak bones/teeth, heart disease, migraines, muscle spasms, painful menstrual periods, and even diabetes. For every 100 grams of truly raw cacao you will receive 550 mg of magnesium, which means 1 serving of raw cacao will get you very close to your recommended daily allowance!
- Health benefits of chocolate when it is in the form of raw cacao beans, butter, nibs and/or the powder include; weight loss (because of its high chromium and coumarin content), prevention of cavities (theobromine actually kills streptococci mutans one of the strains of bacteria that cause tooth decay) and regulation of blood sugar which is beneficial for diabetes (chromium can naturally regulate blood sugar). Also raw cacao benefits the heart and the entire cardiovascular system as a whole.
Why you should eat raw cacao instead of cooked
First, just to clarify, “raw” chocolate has actually been fermented, which is a very good thing nutritionally. Fermentation makes foods a lot more digestible, activating compounds that you want to be eating, and neutralizing those you don’t. So all so-called raw chocolate is actually fermented. No, it doesn’t have a funky taste like kimchi or sauerkraut, but you can definitely taste a tangy tannic quality in good dark chocolate, not dissimilar from wine.
The benefits of raw chocolate (compared to cooked) include: much higher levels of antioxidants (oligomeric procynanidins, resveratrol and the polyphenols: catechin and epicatechin) as well as the preservation of vitamin C, phenethylamine (PEA, the feel-good neurotransmitter responsible for the feeling of love), Omega 6 fatty acids (which when heated become rancid and cause inflammation), tryptophan (a commonly deficient amino acid in those who consume a diet of mostly cooked food) and serotonin (a neurotransmitter that makes us feel goooood.)
Why you should eat eat chocolate with a low-glycemic sweetener like coconut sugar
Sugar has gotten a bad rap over the years for its effect on our blood sugar, hormonal system, and the overall inflammatory effects it can have within the body. Lulu’s supports your health and wellbeing by using only coconut sugar to sweeten their products. This sweetener is made from crystalized coconut nectar harvested directly from the coconut blossom. Mildly sweet, very low glycemic, and caramel-like in flavor, these sugar crystals fuse perfectly with raw cacao nibs in the stone grinders, producing an ultra-silky texture.
The glycemic index of foods can play a huge role in your overall health. Here are 6 amazing benefits of stabilizing blood sugar levels through a low glycemic diet: a lower risk of heart disease, less overall inflammation, a lower risk of diabetes, less yeast or microbial imbalances within the body, easier weight management, and a more stable mental/emotional state. Lulu’s gifts people the ability to experience epic chocolate treats AND an incredible level of health and vitality at the same time! All of their products are low glycemic and easy on the blood sugar, sweetened only with pure, organic coconut palm sugar.
Coconut sugar is also one of the healthiest and most sustainable sweeteners available. Tropical coconut palms require little water to thrive and can actually restore damaged soils and regenerate ecosystems which help support wildlife.
Why almonds are so great for you
Almonds are naturally delicious and extremely nourishing. Sprouted almonds are even healthier, because sprouting makes them more digestible, and unlocks their nutritional potential.
Healthy fats, fiber, antioxidants, calcium, zinc, selenium, copper, magnesium, manganese, tryptophan and vitamin E are just a handful of the key nutrients that make almonds so nutritious. Almonds are so nutritious — their list of benefits reads like a patent medicine bottle. They’re full of health-giving fats, like oleic acid and linoleic acid, powerful antioxidants that can protect against many forms of cancer (oleic acid can protect women against breast cancer specifically), and can also significantly lower the amount of LDL in your blood, and reduce your risk for heart disease. Almonds can effectively improve your complexion, slow down your aging process, help improve your blood profile by reducing your LDL, build a strong immune system, prevent the onset of high blood pressure and protect you from other diseases like ADHD, asthma and osteoporosis. They can also help speed up your metabolism, and work well in weight control. A wonderful natural sweetness and impressive variety of nutrients makes almonds one of nature’s most perfect foods.
