There's more to life than coffee and tea. Yes, really, there is. Picture any cool evening, perhaps next week, and you'd like something warm and mellow, with a complexity not found in herbal tea. Definitely you don't want much in the way of caffeine. How about a hot chocolate, the Paleo way? All you need to do is brew up a mug of Ghana Light Roast Crio Bru: real ground cacao beans, ready to steep with hot water and pour directly into your cup and into your heart. It's the best thing to happen to your coffee pot since, well, coffee. ~

For the true, true stories behind this incredible foodstuff, read on.

First comes chocolate. Always. Chocolate in the morning, chocolate in the evening, chocolate chocolate chocolate.

Oh, all right. That's not always true. Sometimes the morning has coffee. Sometimes the weekends have neither. But when it comes to sating the chocolate tooth, almost nothing does it better than Crio Bru: ground cacao beans ready for hot water and your mug. Wait, what? Chocolate brewed like coffee? Yessiree. What you'll get, after measuring out the grounds, stirring with hot water, and straining into your cup, is a deep umber-hued liquid of happiness. It's not "black" like coffee, but a clear deep earthy color that allows the complexity of cacao shine through. Add a touch of your favorite creamer if you'd like, or simply savor it as is.

I found that having a cup of this Ghana light roast Crio Bru is perfect in mid-morning or early afternoon, when I think I'm craving yet another cup of coffee. What I need is a little bit of a pick me up and some nutrients to mellow my stress levels. Crio Bru doesn't add much in the way of caffeine, so no worries about staying up late. Just a clean chocolate flavor that tastes amazing.

These days, raw cacao is all over paleo snacks and supplements, but any organic cacao is loaded with nutrients. Whether or not the cacao is then roasted is a matter of preference and taste. Raw cacao nibs are used as snacks, salad toppings, texture in granola, and on and on. But roasted? Oooh boy! There's a whole 'nother level of flavor to be had when the nibs are gently roasted to draw out depth and even more complexity.

What is this stuff called "Crio Bru", anyway?

Crio Bru is the 100% natural, 100% pure, 100% incredible drink made from 100% cacao beans, roasted and ground to perfection and brewed just like coffee. Named after the Criollo – the most prized of cacao beans – Crio Bru will delight you with its complex chocolatey flavors, subtle aromas and balanced, antioxidant-rich health benefits!

Both new and ancient, Ka’kao was an everyday drink of the indigenous peoples of Central and South America for centuries – the great Incas, Mayans, Olmecs and Aztecs. And now its incredible health properties have been rediscovered for life today.

Why roasted cacao is so great for you

Crio is more than happy to talk about what gives Crio Bru its mellow energy lift and mood boosting properties:

"The natural, non-addictive energy boost you get from drinking Crio is a product not of caffeine (a common misconception), but from theobromine, an amazing compound that provides focused, mild, long-lasting energy, as well as acting as a natural appetite suppressant and fat blocker for those trying to lose weight. After a cup of Crio in the morning, you’ll feel great all day, without caffeine’s “jitters and crash” effects."

Cacao contains the highest concentration of antioxidants of any food in the world. This point is so astounding that it bears repeating: No food exhibits greater antioxidant capacity than cacao! These antioxidants include polyphenols, catechins, and epicatechins. By weight, cacao has more antioxidants than red wine, blueberries, acai, pomegranates, and goji berries COMBINED.

The human body naturally produces endorphins after exercise, neurotransmitters which flood our brains with positive feelings. One of these neurotransmitters is anandamide, also known as “The Bliss Chemical.” While humans have to work hard to produce enough anandamide to reach higher levels of ecstasty, only one plant produces this chemical as part of its normal metabolism: cacao!

Cacao contains about 1% theobromine. Most commonly found in cacao, this chemical element is an effective anti-bacterial substance which works to kill Streptococci mutans (the primary organism responsible for cavities). Theobromine is a chemical relative of caffeine but it does not act as a nervous system stimulant. Theobromine dilates the cardiovascular system making the hearts job easier. The combination of theobromine and magnesium make cacao an important part of a heart-healthy diet.

How to prepare Crio Bru

You make Crio Bru basically just like coffee. Add the ground beans to your favorite brewing device, 2 Tbsp per cup, and you're all set. One note, though: any pot that allows a longer steep of the beans will bring out the flavors to the best possible depth and satisfaction. So think French press and Aeropress if you've got one of those handy (though be careful with using any paper filter as Crio Bru swells and thickens in hot water. Metal/gold filters or a French press are best). Working with a drip pot? No worries, use a meta or gold mesh filter and brew extra strong. You'll be drinking a hearty rich brew in no time.

When you try this brew fresh out of the pot, you'll be amazed at the complex flavors contrasting against the light taste of each sip. This is not 'black' like coffee but rather a mocha tan hue, perfectly balanced and delicious. Drink "black", or add your favorite creamer to sweeten the deal. You can even mix ground coffee with Crio Bru to make something with mocha flavors built right in!

Here's a bonus tip: use those grounds! You can add them to your next healthy smoothie for an added boost of fiber and antioxidants. (Just don't give them to the dog!)
