"Hi, my name is Jerky." "No, you can't be. You're, you're . . . vegan!" "Oh yeah? Try me. Dare ya." "Oh, okay, fine. I'll just have a little piece and then we'll see just how good vegan meat-like things could possib-omnomnom . . ." That's a replay of the conversation between my head and this brightly colored bag of Cocoburg Coconut Jerky the first time I succumbed to its meaty wiles. Yes, it tastes kind of meaty. Yes, it still tastes like coconut. In short, it is weird and wonderful, this "vegan jerky".
It's well established by now—at least in the last few years, anyway—that coconut is pretty darn good for you. Thankfully the days are over when coconut's saturated fat was vilified and held in contempt by those who thought that all solid fats were about the worst thing you could put in your body. Those days are gone, and here is yet one more glorious and delicious way to celebrate the coconut: Raw Coconut Jerky by a little company out of Brooklyn called Cocoburg.
The first time I tried it I was, let's say, skeptical, in the same way that I am skeptical of any food that tries to be something that it is not. Jerky? That's made out of meat! Now, I love coconut, but it ain't jerky. Unless, you and me and everyone widens our perspective just a little to accept that dehydrated spiced young coconut MEAT is freaking delicious. Because it is.
This snack pack turned my skepticism around and made me a fan. The coconut aminos (a soy-free alternative to traditional soy sauce) add a huge punch of umami—that flavor that gives meat its meatiness. And a burst of chili from jalapenos is only slightly tamed by the lime juice pucker. Chili Lime is a fabulous way to get your snack on, with far more satisfaction than actual jerky from actual animals. Yes, for real. Why is that? Well, jerky is actually low in fat, and coconut has a good dose of healthy fats to sate your appetite and leave you happy and calm. I'm in love with a vegan product. Shhhhhhhhh!
The idea is simple but revolutionary: we believe that simple, natural, unprocessed foods are not only the most delicious, but also the most healthy.
Looking out on a world of heavily processed snack foods, we feel a bit like pioneers as we offer you Cocoburg: the first and only raw, vegan, paleo, gluten-free, soy-free, superfood jerky known to humanity.
