For the true, true stories behind this incredible foodstuff, read on.

Bone broth seems to be the kombucha of this year (or is it the juice?) It's sold in good grocery stores, recipes on how to make your own are swapped at Crossfit gyms, and oh-so-sustainable and paleo-friendly restaurants are serving it as a hot beverage alongside tea and coffee. But why? Why would something as simple as soup without any stuff in it be so interesting?

Simply put, chicken bone broth is one pretty-darn good food. Milder and sippable any time of day, it fits right into your already pretty healthy life routine. It won't replace all of the nutritious food you eat, but boy is it a great complement. Full of healing nutrients and bone building materials and a good punch of gelatin for connective tissue. You can't get much better than just having a nice piece of liver. Ok, sorry, didn't mean to bring up bad memories.

Kettle & Fire made this broth from hormone free organic chicken bones. Simmered for 20 hours with vegetables and herbs, seasoned with apple cider vinegar and a touch of salt. Then they went the extra mile and rather than sell it to you frozen (super expensive!) or in styrofoam, they spent a boatload of time and money to make a green packaging BOX for the broth. Basically, it is the juice box of the future. Straw not included.

Why Organic Chicken Bone Broth is so good for you

So why the hype? This liquid—which you could say just seems like soup without all the good stuff—is it really worth the fuss? In short, the answer is heck yeah. The reason is in the preparation and the magic of science. Take some meaty bones of any animal (in this case, organic, hormone-free, antibiotic-free chickens), complete with their protective cartilage and other attachments, and simmer it for hours and hours with a few aromatics. Over that time, amazing things happen. All of those attachments break down, slowly, and they add some amazing nutrients to the liquid: collagen turns into gelatin, proline, glycine, arginine, and glutamine amino acids join the party, and glucosamine and chrondroitin are present and ready to help you heal.

Not to mention, there are some serious minerals all ready to absorb: calcium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus. They slowly get incorporated into the broth over many, many hours (this is why chicken bone broth needs about 20 hours to be fully ready and the most nutritious) from the bones themselves. Adding just a touch of acid, usually vinegar, to the broth, helps to draw out those minerals while simmering.

How to use Chicken Bone Broth

Broth is great on it's own, or as the base for many recipes:

  1. Starter liquid for your favorite soup
  2. Use to deglaze a pan after sauteeing veggies or meat
  3. Cook veggies in it for extra nutrition (just make sure you drink it afterwards!)
  4. Use to make gravy or sauces
  5. Warm it up all gentle and stuff and sip from a mug. Yum.

About Kettle & Fire, in their own words

"We’re two brothers, Nick and Justin, who are passionate about health. Our mom would say it’s due to the zucchini chocolate cakes (bleh) she used to make for us when we were young. It was this passion for health that drove us to start Kettle & Fire Bone Broth, which made America’s first and only USDA grass-fed bone broth.

This company started when Justin and I first heard about bone broth and its amazing health benefits in late 2013. As soon as we heard how good it was for us, we knew we had to get some for ourselves. However, bone broth proved impossible to buy, and was hard to make because sourcing grass-fed bones was near impossible. We wanted this bone broth for ourselves (we may be young, but by god our joints kill us sometimes) and weren’t satisfied with what was out there... frozen bone broth, made with bones from non-organic, non-grass-fed cattle…with minimum order requirements…and costly shipping ($40+!!) in styrofoam containers which are EXTREMELY harmful to the environment.

All of this led us on a year-long journey to find the best manufacturer, the best bones, the best ingredients, and the best packaging. We can now proudly say that we have succeeded."

How does Kettle & Fire make their broth? Here's what they say:

"Kettle & Fire bone broth is made with bones from organically raised chickens or cattle, then slow simmered for a solid 24 hours with organic vegetables, sea salt and herbs. All that simmer-time extracts insane amounts of protein, not to mention glycine, glucosamine, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium. That’s a long list of goodness, all of which your body converts into energy, stronger muscles, and a more effective immune system. Bone broth is also an amazing source of collagen, which is great for your skin, hair, nails and bones."

Here are answers to some of your most important questions!

What about that packaging? What's the story behind the box?

Our packaging is where we really differentiate ourselves from other bone broth companies. After many months of working with food scientists, world-renowned chefs (one who was on Iron Chef!), and our co-packer, we were able to create a bone broth that doesn’t spoil, even at room temperature, without adding any preservatives, additives or extra sodium.

Not only do we want to make and sell the best bone broth, but we want to do so in a way that is environmentally friendly. Our packaging is recyclable and made mainly of wood fibre - a natural and renewable raw material. The FSC™ label on our packaging is a guarantee that it is sourced from responsible forest management and other controlled sources, and it is supported by global environmental organizations like WWF and Greenpeace.
