Coconut Jerky, Original by Cocoburg

Jerky made from something other than meat? Yep. Ok, but it totally tastes like weird fakey meat-stuff, right? Nope. It's a hard concept to swallow, especially when many of us are accustomed to eating vegan versions of carnivorous foods and walking away . . . dubious. But here in this bag of coconut jerky, dreams come true. Chew on one of these strips of savory satisfaction from Cocoburg, made from young coconut meat and the perfect amounts of meaty seasonings. Smile with the happiness that comes from real food.  ~

For the true, true stories behind this incredible foodstuff, read on.

It's well established by now—at least in the last few years, anyway—that coconut is pretty darn good for you. Thankfully the days are over when coconut's saturated fat was vilified and held in contempt by those who thought that all solid fats were about the worst thing you could put in your body. Those days are gone, and here is yet one more glorious and delicious way to celebrate the coconut: Raw Coconut Jerky by a little company out of Brooklyn called Cocoburg.

The first time I tried it I was, let's say, skeptical, in the same way that I am skeptical of any food that tries to be something that it is not. Jerky? That's made out of meat! Now, I love coconut, but it ain't jerky. Unless, you and me and everyone widens our perspective just a little to accept that dehydrated spiced young coconut MEAT is freaking delicious. Because it is.

I had no idea vegan jerky could taste like anything other than "fake meat". Cocoburg completely shocked me with these decadent and toothy strips of coconut. Far from sweet, they're doused in coconut aminos (a soy-free alternative to traditional soy sauce) for umami out the wazoo, then kissed by garlic and onion and pepper to add the right amount of spice. This Cocoburg Original Coconut Jerky is a fabulous way to get your snack on, with far more satisfaction than actual jerky from actual animals. Yes, for real. Why is that? Well, jerky is actually low in fat, and coconut has a good dose of healthy fats to sate your appetite and leave you happy and calm. I'm in love with a vegan product. Shhhhhhhhh!
