Ghee can be misunderstood. Really, it is neither mysterious nor foreign. To say "it's like butter but different" is to underestimate the awesome capabilities of this healthful oil. First, the process: ghee starts as butter that is heated to the point where the milk solids are separated and removed, and water is evaporated, leaving a delicious golden-yellow oil. It removes the two things that can make butter go bad and leaves behind rich golden flavor and tons of nutrients.
What remains is a nutty, intensely-flavored fat that withstands higher cooking temperatures than butter and can even be stored in your cabinet. Try that with butter! (Actually, don't abuse your butter that way....)
Oh, but THIS sultry ghee recipe? Get ready for yum! True, there are several pretty darn good ghees out there on the market, both pastured and organic. Some of them are great for cooking, with their clear flavor coming through. THIS jar is something else entirely: ghee melded with rich cacao and a tiny bit of wild honey to make something far more nutritious and potent than even your favorite hazelnut jarred spread. Go ahead: take a little taste even before you reach for the strawberries or the slice of gluten-free bread. You've never had ghee like this before: notes of caramel, toasted hazelnuts, and unfathomably buttery depths — all shrouded in a warm cloak of cacao and a whisper of wild honey to smooth the edges. It's like having a little bit of that golden California sun right on your spoon. Watching your sugar grams? You're all good here — there's only a teeny-tiny amount of wild honey in this sumptuous concoction, 1g per tablespoon. Just enough to heighten the experience, and no more.
Why Ghee? Why indeed, other than it is ghee-licious? Ghee has been used for thousands of years, originating in ancient India to prevent butter from spoiling. It is truly an ancient health food! Ghee quickly was integrated into the diet, into ceremonial practice and into Ayurvedic healing practices. It’s believed to promote both mental purification and physical purification through its ability to cleanse and support wellness. Ghee benefits the body both inside and out, and is actually used topically to treat burns and rashes as well as to moisturize the skin and scalp.
This Grass-fed Organic Ghee by Gold Nugget is made from the milk of grass-fed cows pastured year-round on the pristine lush grasses of Northern California. No GMOs, no added salt, no preservatives, no trans fats, no colors or dyes, no MSG, no flavor enhancers. There's nothing more pure than this ghee, and nothing more glorious from "The Golden State". The only thing Gold Nugget adds to this jar is organic honey, organic cacao, and a hint of cardamom. Your tummy and mouth will rejoice.
Ghee is the same high-vitamin butter oil that Weston A. Price was using to heal his patients’ teeth in conjunction with raw milk, liver, and fermented cod liver oil. If it’s made of grass-fed butter, it’s a great source of Vitamin K2, period. Weston A. Price was calling it Activator X, but it is now known that it was actually the same thing as Vitamin K2.
About Gold Nugget Ghee, in their own words
It all started with a vision by entrepreneur, foodie, and biohacker Daniel Draskinis to reconnect people with traditional foods, specifically nutritious and healthy fats. Daniel became aware of ghee when he was experimenting with different diets and found the wealth of ancestral foods that have been forgotten about in the American diet. Through tapping into the ancestral wisdom and foods, he found his own optimal performance eating ghee. As an outdoor enthusiast, rock climber, yogi, and ultra marathoner, he wanted something that would fuel and sustain his adventures.

How to use ghee
Ghee is like butter, only more versatile (because of its high smoke point), more delicious, and more nutritious. Use it everywhere you’d use butter or oil. We are all about oil rotation at Barefoot Provisions — go ahead and alternate your ghee with olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, tallow, lard, etc. Pay attention to what oil you’re craving most at any particular moment — it’s probably going to give you the nutrition you need most.
You probably know a lot of different ways to use butter and oil. Regardless, here's a quick run-down of our favorites:
Toppings, spreads, and mix-ins
- Blend into coffee or tea
- Mix with good quality coarse sea salt. Spread over paleo flatbread.
- Mix with nut butters such as almond, peanut, cashew and others for an amazing dip for apples and other fruits.
- Toss into fresh popped popcorn (yep, even paleos eat heirloom popcorn sometimes).
Out of the ordinary
- Pack it up for traveling, camping, picnicking, and hiking – it’s shelf-stable and doesn’t need refrigeration.
- Dip a kalamata olive into the jar and trust us!
- Enjoy straight out of the jar! ☺
